Becoming a Qualified Medical Office Assistant

The Medical Office Assistant Program is designed to prepare students for an exciting and rewarding career as a clerk/secretary in a health care setting. Students will gain knowledge in Medical Terminology, billing procedures, appointment booking & scheduling, transcription prioritizing & organizational skills and communication skills. This knowledge will be taught within the modules in the Medical Office Assistant Program.

Admissions Requirements

  1. High School Graduate or equivalent OR mature student status (19 years or older prior to starting the program)
  2. Meet one of the following English Language Proficiency requirements:
    • Minimum Grade 12 English (Domestic Students)
    • For English as second language students; Overall IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
    • Pass the College’s English admission test.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be able to:

  • Have a good understanding of Medical Terminology
  • Schedule/confirm medical appointments
  • Greet patients upon arrival at medical offices and interview them in order to complete forms, documents and medical history
  • Gain knowledge of effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Telephone etiquette
  • Transcribe recorded documents in accordance with established formats
  • Transcribe correspondence, reports, presentation, and other documents from notes
  • Initiate and maintain confidential medical files and records
  • Process medical billing procedures
  • File documents and charts according to established filing systems
  • Locate and retrieve documents from the filing system
  • Gain knowledge of ordering supplies and maintaining inventory
